Ciao... This past week was a busy one, full of site seeing. Wednesday we took a class trip to Ostia Antica a site they compare to the ruins of Pompeii but a lot smaller. It was a good sight for pictures of signage, symbols, and a lot of typography great for rubbings that we were able to use for our project that is in progress in one of my graphic classes. We were also able to take a great class photo at the end of the day at the site.
Thursday morning we left for Naples, which I was not very excited about because to be honest Naples is not one of my favorite places and scares me just a little bit ha!!! We went to two museums in Naples and then we were out of there thank goodness. After naples we took the bus to Sorrento a coastal town in Southern Italy. We stayed at a local convent on a hilltop in Sorrento, it was so cute when we arrived the Nuns were so excited to see us. We had about 15 minutes to change into a nicer outfit for dinner and then back on the bus to head to the center of Sorrento. Kelly and I were sharing a room for the night and while finishing up getting ready we noticed that we didn't hear anyone any more in the surrounding rooms. As we hurried out of our room we heard the bus pulling away and the Nun was signaling us to run, run, run; so kelly and I ran after the bus waving our arms ridiculously ha! Finally they stopped but only after we had chased them halfway down the street. It was the funniest thing that had happened for a while and I heard the whole bus practically ran to the back of the bus to see the spectacle of Kelly and I. We had dinner at the Lemon Tree is was an amazing 5 coarse meal and it was so neat because we all ate together as an Iowa State group.
The next morning I could hardly eat breakfast because I was still full from the meal the night before. Before we left for Pompeii, Kelly and I made sure to get a photo with our favorite Nun and by far the smallest of them all! We took a short train ride to Pompeii and started our long day of walking throughout the ruins of the amazing city that once was. Pompeii was destroyed, and completely buried, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius that spanned two days in August of AD 79. During some early excavations of the site, voids in the ash were found that contained human remains and they then realized that they could inject plaster into them to perfectly recreate the forms of many of Vesuvius's victims. It was crazy to see some of the plaster casts of bodies of the lives taken during this tragic happening. Pompeii was very overwhelming because of all the sights and historic content. It was hard to think back to what it used to look like before the volcano erupted. We met back up at the entrance of the site around 3:30 to head back to Rome. It was about a 3 hour train ride home, and it was straight to bed because I was so exhausted from a long week and day of sight seeing. It was a great week full of new and interesting things. This weekend we are traveling to Florence and I am so looking forward to a great weekend in the beautiful area of Tuscany. Until then Arrivederci!!
