Hello all, I am so sorry it has taken me this long to make a new entry but finally I have some down time to write. Friday October 24th my Mom and Sue arrived in Roma. It was great to finally see both of them and I was looking forward to a great week ahead.
Their first night here I took them to Campo de Fiori for a bite to eat and had planned to meet up with some friends for a drink. We found a quaint little cafe along the edge of the square and had some typical Italian food Pizza and Caprese. The guys showed up after dinner so we moved out into the center of the square and were chatting when all of a sudden I got pooped on by a bird, wouldn't ya know not a tree in sight or a bird for that matter. So that makes it two times for me and I am sure there will be more to come even though I hope not! After taking in all the wonderful surroundings plus bird poop we decided to call it a night since we had to get up the next morning at a decent time to head to Lucca to see Giulia. We arrived in Lucca Saturday afternoon and had a quick lunch took a small nap for those jet lagged (Mom and Sue) and headed to dinner for some traditional Italian soup and cuisine. It was great to be around Giulia and her family again they are always so welcoming. We took the rest of the weekend to enjoy the Tusan country side with a walk through the country, a real Italian family dinner plus chestnut cracking and eating... something everyone should experience, and all the quaintness of the Lucca. The weather was beautiful in Lucca couldn't have been any better, on the other hand when we arrived back in Roma it was a different story.
Sue, my mom and I cooked dinner for the boys monday night, I figured since they are kind enough to cook for us almost every monday night I might as well do them a favor and let them enjoy some home cooking as well. And nothing is better than Ragu and Sue's Italian version of Apple Crisp for dessert. We did some sight seeing on Tuesday and that night the guys cook us a great dinner with Lasagna and roasted potatoes. Tim never ceases to amaze me with his cooking skills. During dinner we started to hear the beginning of a thunder storm but thought it would pass by, when we went to walk home we realized it had really just started! We were tromping through ankle deep water because Roma we learned does not have a good draining system and umbrellas couldn't help us at this point either because it was raining cats and dogs. When we finally made it back to my apartment so that I could pick up some clothes for the week to stay at there apartment they had rented we all were wearing soaking wet pants, soaking rain coats, our shoes were so full of water you could dump water out of them. After an eventful night of playing in the rain we made it back to their apartment. The rest of the week was full of sightseeing and rain but we made the best of it.
Thursday I took Mom and Sue to my art history class so they could meet my amazing professor who impresses me with his knowledge more every class period. I have never had so much fun learning art history until now and by the comments I think my Mom and Sue enjoyed it just as much as I did. Friday night as we all know was October 31st Halloween, My apartment had originally decided to do an 80's theme so I passed it along to my Mom and Sue so that they could enjoy Halloween with us as well. I didn't really think they were going to go all out. Sue's costume was the best quite classic and she brought the whole thing from the states and we ended up rummaging through Roman markets and stores for Mom's costume and mine as well. The rest of my apartment changed their minds on the 80's theme and Kelly was a candy corn and Tiffany was a package, such cute ideas!! Sue and Mom made pumpkin bars that were to die for and they also brought candy corn and peanuts for our Halloween party. It was a great night and seeing my Mom and Sue dressed up is a memory that will last forever.
Saturday was very relaxing we spent the day walking around Rome and taking in the last minute sights, eating lunch at a cute cafe and shopping... what could be more fun! That night my mom and I went to dinner together at a nice little restaurant in the Trestevere area. It was great to catch up and have some quality mom and daughter time!
Sunday we took the train in the morning to Florence for the day to check out the city. It was a full day... we saw the Duomo Cathedral, the Ponte Vecchio, the Florence Market where we spent the majority of the time trying to decide what authentic leather purse to buy ha! and many shops along the way. We took the train home that night and the rest of the night was full of packing and sadness knowing I had to say goodbye in the morning. It was hard to say goodbye Monday morning but 6 weeks will go by fast and we will be enjoying family time again... I can't wait! Having my Mom and Sue here was a blast and we made many memories that I am sure will last a lifetime and I already find myself recalling all the good times we had. Well, look forward to the next blog about my amazing trip to Switzerland and Venice!!!
